Three Cheers for Eagle Fans!

While it was a great year for the football team.... how bout those EAGLE FANS?!

This community got more excited about thier local footbal team as each week passed this season. These might have been the best fans in the state.

Wellsville fans were certainly loud and excited for the Eagle's second round home playoff against Neodesha. But that was nothing compared to contingent that followed their football team the the state quarterfinals AT Silver Lake.

The weather was miserable.  It was cold and wet. And driving from Wellsvillle to Silver Lake in the pouring rain and driving winds wasn't any picnic either.

But despite all that, the visitors side at Silver Lake was packed full, with overflow lining up the fence in front of the track  There had to be more WHS fans than hometown Silver Lake fans. And the Eagle fans were proud and loud from the opening kickoff.

The best part?  It was colder and wetter and with Wellsville down 28-0 at the start of the 4th quarter; these fans were cheering just as hard and loud as they were at the opening kickoff.  On Brandon Ebeck's 52 yard TD run, you would have thought the Eagles had just tied the game with seconds left. ..... Think the players didn't appeciate that?

These weren't fair weather fans. These were BAAAD Weather Fans and proud of it.

Eagles lose to Silver Lake 28-7 in Quarterfinal Playoff

Silver Lakes Size and Mud Too Much to Overcome.

2009 Wellsville vs Silver Lake 2009 Wellsville vs Silver Lake

What a great season. The Wellsville Eagles finish with a 10-2 record.

The one drawback of being in the playoffs is that only ONE playoff team in Kansas 3A football will end the season on a winning note. The rest aren't so fortunate.  And so it goes, Wellsville'season is done ... but it was exciting.

Wellsville entered the quarterfinal (sectional) playoff game against Silver Lake as a sizeable underdog. The Eagles would have needed a near perfect game and a few breaks to win. Neither happened.

This game was decided in the trenches.  The Eagles offensive line that has been so effective and dominant throughout the season was physically overmatched by Silver Lake's huge lineman. Outside of Logan O'Dea (listed at 250 lbs), the rest of the starting line weighed in averaging about 190-195 lbs. Silver Lake's line averaged about 290 lbs., a number of whom were Division 1 college prospects.

Under the best conditions, Wellsville was going to struggle with it's inside  rushing game. Even O'Dea was was dwarfed as he lined up against Lake's 2 bigest linemen throughout the game, who listed at 310 and 320 lbs.

Given those circumstances, Wellsville's backs needed to get to the outside quickly, as they have done all season, to generate some offense. But the weather conditions were horrible; it was a mud bowl.  It was difficult enough to hold on to the ball let alone get any traction in the mud to beat Silver Lake's linebackers to the corners.

The end result was little offense.  Brandon Ebeck did manage to break out in the open outracing the Silver Lake defenders for a 51 yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

On defense, Wellsville played an effective game and limited the potent Silver Lake offense to 28 points.. This was an offense that put 40 points on the scoreboard in the 1st half against previously undefeated Pleasant Ridge just a few games prior to this matchup.

But with the Eagles offense stalled, that meant Silve Lake had more opportunities for themselves.  While Wellsville's defense stopped Silver Lake a number of times throughout the game, they were just too big, too powerful and talented to keep out of the endzone.

Other Game Accounts:

From Kpreps.com, "Around the Bracket - Nov. 12 & 13"

Silver Lake is back in the state semifinals after a one-year absence.  The Eagles knocked off a good Wellsville team, 28-7 behind 109 yards and a touchdown from J.D. Morehead.  Camron Rickel added 82 yards and a score for the Eagles, and quarterback Keenan Kruger threw for 90 yards while throwing a touchdown pass and rushing for a score.  Brandon Ebeck broke a 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to spoil the shutout.  Ebeck finished with 78 yards rushing to lead the Eagles.

Pregame About Wellsville vs Silver Lake Playoff

From Topeks Capital Journal Online

by Brent Maycock, 11/11/2010

CLASS 3A

WELLSVILLE (10-1) AT SILVER LAKE (10-1) - Silver Lake handled its rematch with Riley County with relative ease, building a 27-6 halftime lead en route to a 42-18 rout of the Falcons. The Eagles capitalized on six Riley County turnovers, one of them a fumble Brit Dewey returned 55 yards for a touchdown. JD Morehead ran for 123 yards, 73 on a touchdown run to start the scoring.

Wellsville, which has lost only to 2-1A quarterfinalist Olpe (10-8), blasted Neodesha 55-12 as Dalton Hughes ran for 168 yards and two of the Eagles' seven rushing touchdowns. Wellsville coach Mark Luedtke knows Silver Lake well, having coached at Rossville and going 3-1 against the Eagles during that stint.

Pregame "Staff" Evaluation/Comments:

The Silver Lake Eagles are flat out good. And they are good year in and year out. Currently they are ranked #2 in the state. (click here for rankings)

In most years in recent memory, they have been considered the top 3A football team in eastern Kansas. The geography is important because the playoff brackets are divided into two brackets; east and west.

The state championship game pits the winners of the east and west brackets.

This year the Silver Lake Eagles are 10-1.  Their only loss was to 4A powerhouse and #2 4A ranked Louisburg.  Needless to say, Wellsville has a significant challenge in front of them.

Both these teams have played one another in each of the last 2 years, as well as numerous other times in the past.  It's safe to say they are familiar with each other. Wellsville has never beaten Silver Lake.

In the past 10 years, Silver Lake has been in the state finals for most of those years. These Eagles have won six 3A state championships.  The most recent one in 2006. No doubt they have their sights set on another state trophy.

Wellsville is a 15 point underdog according to the Topeka Capital Journal. Except ..... there's 40 Eagle players, 5 coaches and a building full of students that don't give a hoot.

This much is guaranteed; there will be 11 Wellsville Eagle players giving it 100% on every play.  No more "moral" victories.  Wellsville is playing to win.

Middle School Football Caps Off Great Season

Head Coach Brock Campbell along with assistants Chris Rose and Brent Shaffer deserve special recognition for job they have done with these young middle schoolers. These coaches and their players have been great representatives of the Wellsville community.

  • 7th Grade: The 7th grade team finished the season by defeating Burlington 12-6 for 3rd place in the PIoneer League and a final season record of 4-2-1.
  • 8th Grade: The 8th grade team finished the season with a 5-2 record. The young Eagles earned a berth in the 8th grade title game against their season nemesis, the Burlington Bobcats. The Eagles only regular season defeat was against these Bobcats.

In the title game, it was back and forth between the 2 teams and tied 14-14 late in the 3rd quarter. But in the end, the athletic and physically larger Burlington team took the contest.  The final score was 28-20 in a game that both teams should be proud of their efforts.

It was a terrific season for both Wellsville Middle School teams. Great job!

9/2/10 Eagles ... The Darkhorse Team in 3A?

From Topeka Capital Journal Online (9/2/10)

"Looking for a sleeper team in 3A? It could be WELLSVILLE (Pioneer), which has progressed in the first two years under Mark Luedtke and now has its most experienced squad with 10 starters back on offense and 11 on defense.

Senior Jesse Campbell (6-1, 195) was an all-league on both the offensive and defensive line last year, but will move to running back and linebacker. He'll complement Dalton Hughes (6-1, 200), who rushed for 650 yards last year and the line is hardly bare led by junior Logan O'Dea (6-0, 245), who has started every game of his career."

8/27/10 League Coaches Poll: Wellsville Favored for League Title

From The Miami County Weekend (8/27/10)

" ......  the Eagles now have something else to worry about: living up to the hype of being the preseason favorite to win the Pioneer League, according to a preseason coaches poll.

Luedtke said he was flattered by receiving that high of a ranking, but his squad, which went 4-5 in 2009, also has a bigger goal in mind: advancing to the playoffs. The Eagles don’t want just to advance to the postseason, they have plans of making a deep run.

Wellsville has plenty of experience to lean on, with nine starters returning on offense and eight on defense......." To read the complete article, go to this link: Wellsville Eagles Favored to Win Pioneer League , or, just  click on the document image (pdf.) below.
